AC.02 The Chaldean Church of Mār Gīwargīs
This church is not dedicated to the famous St. George but to a monk, Gīwargīs, disciple of Bar-‛Edtā (mid 6th century) who is assumed to have founded a monastery where his church now stands. It is not known when the current church was founded but a relatively early date is suggested by the existence of a well in the courtyard of the church. The church was renovated in 1715 as is claimed by the inscription below and also by the double lintels, a typical Jalīlī style; see Fiey 1965-1968, vol. II, p. 412f.
