Hover a word for its meaning. Glosses draw on Amir Harrak’s translations and the SEDRA 3 Syriac lexicon (Beth Mardutho), used for academic purposes.

(1-5) Blessed is who fears the Lord and who walks in his ways: Ps. 127:1. You saw the light in the world of misery, O our Father Yawsef Daddīzā, and while still of tender age, you recognized the hidden poison of the world, and to flee from it you chose for yourself the way of priesthood like a champion. In it you served with splendour and through it you grew powerful like a cedar! (6-10) You offered sacrifices to the Lord, becoming in his Church a partaker of the Mysteries. You kept yourself busy with the Books of the Old Testament, while the New Testament became for you the tongue. Your name became great in the diocese, for whose members you became the preacher. No matter how many difficulties fell upon you, you endured with a mighty power. When your son Gōrgīs suffered death, and you became deprived of his bond, (11-15) you increased in faith, which grew up in your heart like a treasure. And now your distressed people cries over you with wailing cries, telling you with tears and groans: Go in peace our brave priest; enter the habitations of the Kingdom, whose delight does not end. This is the grave of our late father the Priest Yawsef (16-18) Daddīzā of Kudēdā. He was born on the 28th of Tammūz (July) of the year 1865 of Christ. He served the priesthood for fifty-one years. He died on the 15th day of Latter Tišrīn (November) of the year 1943 of Christ. 254
