The Syriac Orthodox Church of Sergius and Bacchus; The gate to the right side of the sanctuary main gate , Qaraqōš

(1-3) This leader of the diocese rose up to build this church, and he finished it, as was (the case of the churches of) Mōr Ya‛qūb and Mōr Zainō, which he built (just) in one year. Mōr Ēwannīs, along with the believers, mounted the gates and the buildings with diligence and expenses in bad and difficult times. These people of Kudēdā completed them after the Persians who sacked the Christian villages and besieged the people of Mosul for months had gone. Then, after this devastation, the Muslim governor (of Mosul) sent ordering that they build the churches of Mosul (4-6) and the regions. Brothers, this devastation took place during the time of Mōr Ēwannīs—Karas of Kudēdā—pastor of the sublime monastery of Mār Behnam. This one advised the people of Kudēdā: Let us not flee to any place whatsoever, lest the Persians reach us and the Kurds pillage us x x x x x and (people) gathered barley and sustenance. Women and children entered and the barbarians surrounded them. In this oppression <our lord> Ēwannīs, son of Behnam, rose up and gave (money) from the monastery of Mār Behnam, while he did not repress anyone forcibly. {He destroyed (the church) into the ground as it were, not leaving other than its foundations} […], and (rebuilt it) anew […]. Ba 262 Bb 1 2 3 (Ba) Mattā Hūtūn endowed this gate on his own behalf, on behalf of his father (Jerusalem) Pilgrim Nīsān, on behalf of (Bb) their sons, Pawlōs, Priest Yūhannā and ‛Abd-Allāh, and on behalf of all the members of their family.
