The Syriac Orthodox Church of Mārt(y) Šmūnī, the Royal Gate , Ba‛šīqā

(1) In the year 1890 of Christ, this altar was completed for the name of the Father, the Son and the (Holy) Spirit, One Nature adored and glorified, (2) during the days of our virtuous Patriarch who is Patrōs the Third, ’Īġnātiōs by rank, (sitting) on the See of Antioch, (3) and during the days of our Bishop and Shepherd Qūrillōs Aliās—may his prayers accompany all of us and safeguard us from all harms. (4) His (=Bishop Aliās) mina-measure is multiplied by the tenth, and his five talents are increased (five times); his see is established on the mountain, in the monastery of Mattai on Mount Alfāf.

(1) Let us praise the beloved priest, Priest Ablahad the courageous, son of the famous Priest Gōrgīs—their heart[s] are the likeness of Zerubbabel. (2) They (are) people of Bēt-‛Šīqōyē, old Syrians, Christian in faith and nicknamed Jacobites,

(1) This entire congregation, laudable and blessed, rose up to build this church after the name of the famous Mārt(y) Šmūnī. (2) How can we praise the Pilgrim Jallō, the free daughter of Jirjis, who placed a generous donation: five hundred qirš! for the church? (3) She is the wife of the chieftain kawaja Ablahad the competent, of the family ‛(Abd)-al-Nūr, an honest tribe, a fortress as it were to our nation. (4) Written by the sinner ‛(Abd)-al-‛Azīz, Deacon in name only, son of the late Gōrgīs, a priest, Aramean and Jacobite; (the year) 2201 of Greece.

(1b) The generous believers Šammeh and her children (2a) ‛Īsā and Ishāq (1a) donated one thousand five hundred qirš for paving the church (2b) on behalf of the latter’s deceased father the late Sallō Mūsā of Bāhzānī, the year (Arab.) 1893 (Syr.) of Christ 1893.
