This church was small before the expansion which took place in ca. 1851. Originally it was dedicated to the “Small Child” identified in manuscripts as the Martyr Qūriāqōs (Cyriacus)—he is also always mentioned with his mother Juliet. Some sixty years after, it was demolished to be replaced by an even larger structure with three aisles and forty pillars, which was completed in 1931. It was then renamed the Church of the Sacred Heart, though the Small Martyr is still commemorated in the north aisle of the church; Fiey 1965-1968, vol. II, p. 368-369.
