(1-4) The holy Church cries in pain and increases lamentations over this holy leader of our nation, the famous Mār Yawsep. His Lord distinguished him—like Jeremiah—in holiness, so as to become Patriarch over the Chaldeans in Babylon. This Great Priest of praiseworthy behaviour and qualities built monasteries, adorned convents, and erected churches. The modest one acquired humility for his virtuous self, kept vigilant to pray with tears, and loved fasting. (5-8) He despised wealth and rejected glory through (his) serene person and he declined wine, pleasure of the flesh, and worldly attractions. He lived eighty-five years in this universe and for fifty-one (years) he firmly exercised the High Priesthood. This distinguished one remained a beloved leader of his nation for thirty (years)—for the date (of death) in years, think of this actual (lit. last) sentence. This grave was built through the care of the leaders of the congregations of Mosul and Alqōš, on account of their immense love toward their patriarch.
