(1) O you, who ponder this inscription, think about me and say: (2) The world is futile and it will elapse along with its attractions just like me! (3) The dead does not get help from it, thus you may say: (4) Lord, give rest to the one buried here and forgive his sins.

(1-5) In the name of the eternally existing One, who does not have beginning or end. In hope for the resurrection. The Abbot Šmū’ēl Jamīl, Superior General of the Chaldean monasteries, and Archdeacon of the Patriarchal See of Babylon, left this world. He was born in Tal-Kēpē in the year 1847 of our Lord. He entered the monastic order in 1866, was sent to the Propaganda College in 1869, and was ordained priest in Rome in 1879. He served as deputy of the Patriarch and of the Chaldeans (6-9) of Malabar at the Apostolic See for seven years. He assumed the Superiorship General for twenty-seven years. He left this life in 16 Šbāṭ (February) 1917. He bequeathed his (spiritual) children splendid buildings and left various books written with a polished style for the edification of the community. On account of his deeds, may the Lord reward him, so that he will be with the righteous ones who pleased him, through his grace and mercy, amen.
